70's and 80's Alternative Pub rock at its best - attitude, energy and loads of singalong pub classic drinking songs.
In 1978, a new music show appeared screened on BBC2 on Saturday evenings, showcasing unsigned bands that didn't normally get any radio or TV airtime. Some of these were considered to be 'new wave': what that meant was anybody's guess - unlike Punk or 2 Tone, the new wave bands didn't really have a collective 'uniform' or distinct style of dress.
The bands we pay tribute to were labelled by some as the New Wave of sounds rising from the ashes of Punk. What's the difference between Punk and New Wave? Nobody really knows! Some would argue that Punk was a political movement, whereas New Wave wasn't; everyone who followed these new bands had their own idea of where they fit into the grand scheme. Most hit the charts as one-hit wonders, never to be seen or heard of again. Some stayed around long enough to influence the next generation of early indie bands.
British music in the late 70s and early 80s was thriving and was, arguably, in one of its most creative periods. The New Wave flame was snuffed out as quickly as it had appeared by the popularity of the New Romantic movement and synthpop. Even the indie scene was evolving from its roots in the alternative underground to become more mainstream. Good or bad? We'll let you decide...
Guess you'll have your own memories of those heady days! Or maybe you're new to the attitude, energy, and sound of the New Wave? Whichever, we invite you to join us on a heartfelt trip down an edgy, vibrant memory lane...
